Slow Down And See

Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

Luke 8:41–42

If there ever was a time for Jesus to hurry, getting to Jairus’s house was one of them. But a lot of things happened along the way, and Jesus took those opportunities to teach us that life is as much about the journey as it is about the destination.

First, on Jesus’ way to save the dying girl, the crushing crowd made it hard for Him to move quickly. Then, there was a courageous and desperate woman who needed a healing touch—so Jesus stopped to heal her. By the time Jesus arrived, Jairus’s daughter had died, but that wasn’t the end of the story: Jesus raised her to life.

How encouraging to realize that more than one miracle occurred that day—because Jesus wasn’t in a hurry.

We citizens of the twenty-first century are busy, which means we are pretty much always in a hurry. In our rush, we often fail to enjoy the journey. We miss out on blessing people and being blessed by them. So, let’s slow down today. Let’s really see the people around us today. As we do, we may just see a miracle or two.

Lord God, I slow down my pace so I don’t miss the people You’ve put in my path. I want to be sensitive to Your leading today.
