Identity Check

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

Who are you really? We all wear so many hats—mom, wife, sister, friend, coworker, leader, innovator, activist, minister. But what we do is not who we are. And who we are is what God wants us to continually stay in touch with.

I’ve compiled a short list of who you really are. As you go about your day, hold these truths close to your heart. Read them out loud in first person to really let them sink in, and even consider carrying this list around with you. Memorize it and meditate on it until you think first of who you are and not what you do:

I am a child of God (John 1:12–13).

I am saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8–9).

I am alive to God and dead to sin (Romans 6:11).

I am sanctified (John 17:19).

I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

I am a royal daughter (1 Peter 2:9).

I am reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:19).

I am free (John 8:36).

I am justified (Galatians 2:16).

I am chosen (Ephesians 1:4).

God, I’m so grateful for the ways You remind me of who I am. I meditate on them, letting them sink into my heart so I can remember them when my identity is tested.
