Rising to Each Occasion

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is a wonderful movie from Walden Media, portraying the tale of a whimsical toy store and its equally whimsical 243-year-old proprietor. Maybe one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is because it’s not just a story of a magical toy store—it’s a story about life, life and the richness it can contain if we strive to be all that God created us to be.

As the film begins, Mr. Magorium (played by Dustin Hoffman) is readying the store for his passing (“Lightbulbs die, my sweet. I will depart.”). After all, 243-year-olds don’t run toy stores forever, even magic ones. It turns out that his assistant, Molly Mahoney (played by Natalie Portman), is afraid to truly live her life as she really feels she should. Drawing upon his centuries of acquired wisdom, Mr. Magorium looks Molly straight in the eye and says, “Your life is an occasion. Rise to it.”

So is yours. God created you for something distinctly suited for you. Maybe to stand before big crowds, maybe not. Maybe to obtain untold wealth and fame, maybe not. Maybe to become a world-renowned pianist or athlete or preacher, maybe not. Whatever it is, this much is clear—your life is an occasion that was created for you, and you alone, to live. You will impact the world in ways that only you can.

God created an abundant life for you and for me that is best achieved and fulfilled through living it in a relationship aligned with Christ. God intended for our lives to travel a pathway of immeasurable impact in the lives and world around us. He will not only walk alongside us but when necessary will help carry us where He wants us to go.
