Standing On The Solid Rock

From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety.

Psalm 61:2

I will never forget the day my sweet friend Sherry showed us a painting at Community Bible Study. It was a big gorgeous scene painted with soft colors. It was so lifelike that we could almost see the wind blowing, sending the waves crashing into a big, solid rock that jutted out from the center of the sea.

A woman stood on the rock. Now mind you, she wasn’t sprawled out on a beach towel getting a tan or tying up her sailboat. She was alone, with the wind and waves churning all around her. But she was standing upright on the rock, appearing to be unaffected by the wild water in turmoil around her.

This visual picture reminds me of our Solid Rock, Jesus. He is the only really firm place in life. He is the only Person who is immovable, unchanging, always loving, always strong, and solid as a rock!

When the waves of grief, disappointment, disease, death, divorce, and unmet expectations strike us and our hearts are overwhelmed, we need to see ourselves firmly planted on that Rock—with both feet balanced, not wavering, head high, eyes fixed on Jesus. Jesus Christ does not shift like the ebb and flow of ocean waves. He is always higher than our lowest point, always ready to raise us up to stand with Him. When we anchor ourselves to Him, no storm can drown us, no wind can blow us out of His range of protection.

Our lives in the midst of the storm can leave just as memorable an impression on others as that painting did for me.

When your heart is overwhelmed, imagine yourself as that woman standing on the Solid Rock of Jesus Christ. Read Psalm 19:14 aloud as a rock-solid prayer to our immovable God.
