God’s Taste
God’s Taste
Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.
Romans 12:9
Good taste is something I always want to have. However, sometimes when my creative juices are flowing, I can veer toward tacky, like using way too many “sweets” in my writing or too much pink in one place. There is nothing wrong with sweet pink, but there’s something to be said for tasteful moderation. I appreciate the good taste of others so much—Sweet Faye’s thoughtful gifts, Sweet Debbie’s web smarts, and my sweet daughter’s fashion sense.
When it comes to bigger issues of life, I want to strive for God’s taste because His is always very good. In Romans 12:9, we see that God’s taste is to love others, hate what is wrong, and hold tightly to what is good.
Over time, God develops our taste for what pleases Him as we conform to the image of Christ. Early in my faith journey, I had a lot to learn about discernment. Through the years, as I’ve gotten to know God personally through His Word, my conscience is pricked more about what is His taste and what is not.
If you are thinking now about whether or not some things in your own life reflect God’s taste, that means the Holy Spirit is at work in you. That’s a very, very good thing!
If we want God’s taste reflected in our lives, we need to love people, hate what is wrong, and hold tightly to what is good.
Try this “good” word game with me: If we remove one little “o” from the word good, we get God. God and good are inseparable because God is always good and there is no real good apart from God! Reflect God’s taste today.
