Practice Hospitality

Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Romans 12:13

Practice requires repetition. Romans 12:13 clearly says that we should always be eager to show hospitality, over and over again.

As I mentioned in other devotions, the past several weeks my house has been filled with workmen who are replacing our leaky roof. Because of the noise and inconvenience I’m dealing with, I’m not feeling as hospitable as I should. It seems like one more thing to cope with, and I’m physically tired.

Being a firm believer in God and the truthfulness of His Word, I want my faith to triumph over my feelings every time! When you and I step out in faith in practical ways, like doing something God tells us to do—even when we do not feel like it—joy always follows. Joy and obedience go hand in hand. I have never been joyful when I have not been obedient. God wired us to thrive only when we remain in Him (John 15:1-4).

Therefore, I am purposing to practice God’s hospitable grace even in this situation that is stretching my patience. I’m thankful for the stash of cold canned drinks and water we keep available for whomever God may bring to our door. This week, all day long, convenient or not, I’ve been offering beverages to the roofers, the postal worker, and the trash collectors.

I am amazed at how many workmen have said a hearty yes! You know what? It was good for me to serve, even with deadlines and responsibilities and many interruptions. I needed the practice of living out what I believe. You may not be a soda girl, candy girl, or cookie queen, but you may bake a mean cinnamon bread like Sweet Sue or have a scrumptious store-bought snack available. Purpose to practice hospitality.

Find your handy “signature snack,” and be ready to practice hospitality, no matter how small the effort may seem.
