Don’t Forget Your Roots

Don’t Forget Your Roots

You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

Matthew 7:9-11

For years after I got married and moved to my husband’s native state of Virginia, my dad sent me annual gift subscriptions to South Carolina Wildlife magazine. My father had introduced me to South Carolina wildlife from the time I was a small girl by routinely taking me to feed the ducks and fish in the lake. Of course, I would fish only if Daddy baited the hook! So when he sent me the magazine, he told me that he did not want me to forget my roots!

Even though I inherited my tenderhearted daddy’s love for animals and enjoyed his monthly reminder, I kept telling him I would rather have Southern Living magazine! In a letter home I paraphrased today’s verses in Matthew 7. I wrote, “Daddy, if your daughter asks for a Southern Living magazine subscription, will you give her South Carolina Wildlife?” He got the message, laughed, and sent South Carolina Wildlife anyway. I loved it!

God sent us a fully paid gift subscription to eternal life in Jesus Christ. There are no substitutes! This free gift offer keeps coming this side of heaven but cannot be redeemed after we die.

As my gift subscription reminded me, we should never forget our roots. If we are believers in Christ, we are rooted in Him, and we can know that our perfect Father gives good gifts to those who ask Him. God is good! If you are not sure of your relationship to God, please open this free gift subscription in Jesus Christ by faith and receive Him today.

Let’s never forget that our real roots are in Jesus Christ! Share that offer with someone else soon.
