Wrapped Up

Bible Blast: Read Proverbs 5:21-23

An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. Proverbs 5:22

Grab a spool of thread and your mom. Today I’m going to show you how sin can be like a rope that holds you. As I tell you a story, your mom’s going to use the thread to illustrate it.

There was a six-year-old girl who went shopping with her mom. She really, really wanted some gum, but her mom had told her no. So while her mom was paying, the little girl grabbed a pack of bubble gum and stuck it in her pocket.

Now stand up, arms down at your sides, and have your mom wrap thread around your arms and body one time.

Later on the little girl started to feel bad about what she did. She confessed her sin to her mom and to God. She promised never to do it again.

Use your arms to “break free” from the thread. Pretty easy, right?

As the little girl grew, she started seeing other things she wanted but didn’t have the money to buy. It became easy for her to steal books, lip gloss, nail polish, and magazines. She always felt guilty, but it became harder for her to say no to something she wanted.

Have your mom wrap the thread around your arms four times. Now try to break free. Was it harder this time?

When she grew into a teenager, stealing began to take over. She downloaded movies and music illegally online. She stole her friend’s ring. She even took money from her parents’ wallets. She never felt guilty anymore. It was a habit.

This time have your mom wrap the thread around you twenty times! Now do your best to break free from the string. Can you do it? Or does your mom need to grab some scissors?

This is what sin does to us if we let it. We get all tangled up in its “ropes” until we can’t break free anymore. When this happens, the only one who can get you out of it is Jesus—but he doesn’t have to use scissors!

Girl Gab: Mom, let your daughter wrap you in the thread and see if you can break free from it. Talk to each other about how sin keeps you from doing God’s will. Pray for God’s strength to stand against temptations to sin.
