What’s He Looking For?
Bible Blast: Read Mark 12:38-44
They gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on. Mark 12:44
A widow is a woman who was married but her husband has died. The Bible speaks often of the importance of taking care of widows. It can be very difficult for a widowed woman to live without the income of her husband, and this was especially true back when the Bible was written. In today’s Bible Blast, you may have read about a widowed woman who was very poor, but she put two little coins in the offering plate at “church.” It was all she had—and she gave it.
It took more faith and trust for the widow to give her coins than it did for the rich man to give his money because of sacrifice. The widow’s gift was a great sacrifice. The rich man didn’t have to give up any of his needs or desires in order to give some money because he gave what was extra.
The widow knew God would take care of her either by a miracle or through his people. She trusted him enough to give everything she had.
Jesus didn’t observe the people’s giving at the Temple so he could see who gave the most money. He wanted to teach the disciples that giving isn’t about the amount of money. It’s about the value of what you give. As with everything in his Kingdom, value comes from the heart.
