Liquids Vs. Solids
Liquids vs. Solids
Bible Blast: Read Hebrews 5:12-14
Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
Hebrews 5:14
Does your mom have any pictures of you slopped up with baby food in a high chair? I have a picture of my daughter Lexi that I just love. She’s about a year old, sitting in her high chair. The table is covered in mushy baby food, as is her face.
The only thing a newborn baby can eat is mom’s milk or formula. Gradually, as a baby gets older and stronger, you can start giving her vegetables and fruit that have been pureed into an unappetizing, runny consistency. Soon enough she can eat Cheerios, and eventually she’s on her way to sinking her teeth into a thick, juicy steak.
When someone first gives her heart to Jesus, she probably isn’t ready to dive right into some of the more “meaty” things of the faith, like premillennialism vs. amillennialism. (Huh? Don’t worry. Most adults don’t know those words. But your pastor probably does.)
It would be wise for a “baby believer” to begin by learning about prayer and studying the Bible, some of the more simple practices of Christianity, like reading the Gospels or 1 Corinthians 13. The idea of a new Christian drinking “milk” is that she needs to understand and believe the basic truths of her new faith in God before she can go on to tackling some of the more complicated ideas.
On the other hand, those who have been walking with Christ for a while shouldn’t still be drinking milk. The more you grow up in Christ, the more you’ll be able to understand more of the “solid food” of the faith. That’s why your mom probably reads books about her faith and your pastor can define big words. They are “meat eaters.” They’ve grown up and can digest deeper things of the faith.
Make it a goal to grow up in your faith and become a “meat eater.”
Girl Gab: Okay, this will be some fun girl gab. Where do you think you are—spiritually speaking—amidst these choices? Pick one and tell your mom (or daughter) why that’s where you think you are: 1) milk only 2) mashed-up baby food 3) getting on solids 4) eating soft meat 5) T-bones daily.
