Would You Know What to Say?

Bible Blast: Read Acts 4:1-14

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)

Lexi was twelve years old when I dropped her off at pottery class. I wasn’t sure if I should leave her. When we arrived, there was a gallery of skeletons and scenes of death portraying very ungodly things. I wanted to confront the pottery teacher and ask how he could justify displaying this kind of stuff in an art studio where children come to learn. I was so angry, but I felt God clearly telling me to leave Lexi. I also felt God telling me to pray for her while she was in class. I don’t think I’ve ever prayed so hard!

“Mom, you won’t believe what happened!” beamed Lexi when I picked her up. “You know my teacher . . . well, he’s an ag . . . oh, what’s that called when you don’t know and don’t care if there is a God?”

“Agnostic.” I said, wondering where this was going.

“Okay, so when he said he was agnostic, one of the older students said she didn’t believe God existed at all. So they both talked about heaven and hell not being real.

“Anyway, I saw the new girl looking really scared during all of this, and I don’t know where it came from but I just said, ‘Well, I’m a Christian and I’m going to heaven. High five!’ The new girl just smiled. And then we all had this really good talk about God.”

I was so proud of Lexi that day. She knew she was risking a lot. She wasn’t sure the other students would like her if she said what was on her heart. In fact, they respected her for it. She thought her teacher would be angry, but he wasn’t. It reminded me of Peter’s words that we should “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” He was basically saying, “Be ready to talk about Jesus all the time to everyone, no matter what the risk.”
