Language Lab: What Is the “Resurrection”?

Bible Blast: Read John 11:17-27

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.” John 11:25

After Jesus was crucified a man named Joseph (not the same Joseph who was Jesus’ earthly dad) took Jesus’ body and buried him in a tomb. The tomb was sealed with a large stone, and guards were placed by it so no one would be able to steal Jesus’ body.

Well, that didn’t stop Jesus from coming back from the dead three days later. An angel came, rolled the stone away, and sat on it. The guards were so freaked out they started shaking and fell over, looking as if they were dead. Jesus was alive again and on the move. When Mary Magdalene and another lady named Mary (not Jesus’ mom) went to the tomb, the angel said, “He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen” (Matthew 28:6). Jesus then appeared to those two women on their way back to the house where the disciples were. He told them to tell the others that he was no longer dead but alive. Later he also came to visit the disciples.

To be “resurrected” means to be raised up, or brought back to life. The “resurrection” is a term that refers to that moment when Jesus overcame death, stood up, and walked again. If Christ didn’t rise again after being killed, our faith wouldn’t mean anything. If he wasn’t resurrected, then there would be no promise for us of life with him after death. But he did rise again, and so will we. Check out 1 Corinthians 15:23: “There is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.”

Christ’s resurrection is one of the very major things that set him apart from any and every other god in this world. He truly lives forever, and because of that, so will we if we love him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
