When? When? When?

No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. Matthew 24:36

I remember the day my son Rob was born as if it were yesterday—even though he’s a young adult now! Certain things had started happening in my body to let me know the time was coming, so I got my bag ready to go to the hospital. When my husband, Bob, got home, I said, “It’s time!” It took him a minute to understand what I was talking about, but once he did, he went completely nuts, yelling and jumping up and down. He even ran into the nursery, grabbed all the little cute stuffed animals people had given us for our new baby and spiked them onto the floor like footballs. I’m surprised that he actually remembered to drive me to the hospital!

Waiting for a baby to come is such an exciting time. Most of the time, a couple only knows generally when the baby should arrive, but only God knows exactly when it’s coming. It’s funny to watch a husband as he watches his wife get closer and closer to the Big Day. If she makes a strange noise or just sneezes, he jumps for the car keys, ready to drive her to the hospital!

The way Matthew 24 talks about Jesus’ return to earth reminds me of that anxious, happy anticipation. Matthew 24 says we’ll be able to see certain signs that Christ’s return is in the near future, but we won’t be able to say, “I’ve done all the calculations, and Jesus is coming back on the third Thursday of next month!” So if you hear someone saying he or she knows the exact date of Jesus’ return, don’t believe that person. Scripture tells us that God the Father is the only one who knows when that day will be.

So what do we do while we wait for Jesus to come and get us? Tell everyone we know about him! We’ll let them know he’s coming back, and it really could be tomorrow.

We’ll also commit to knowing Jesus as much as we can while we’re here on the earth. Then when we see him in the sky, we can say, “I know you!”
