Good Friendship

Good Friendship

Bible Blast: Read Ruth 1:1-18

There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Lisa is a dear friend of mine. She’s kind, soft-spoken, and a fantabulous cook. She recently opened up her home as a bed-and-breakfast. A bed-and-breakfast is a place a lot like a hotel where people can stay overnight, but it’s in an actual home. It feels much cozier and warmer than most hotel rooms, and the breakfast is always super fantastic!

One of the bedrooms in Lisa’s bed-and-breakfast is a girly-whirly dream. It’s decorated mostly in beautiful pink roses. The bed has lots of cushy pillows with roses stitched on them. The lacy curtains have tiny pink flowers embroidered on them. Lisa placed itty-bitty bouquets of roses in the shower by the shampoo and body wash. That room is so adorable! And you won’t believe this, but she somehow shapes the beginning of the roll of toilet paper to look like a white rose!

In that very beautiful bedroom, I saw a painted wooden sign that says, “Share Faith. Offer Prayer. Gather Hope.” I looked at that sign and thought, Yep. That’s real friendship.

Then I went downstairs to the gorgeously decorated TV room in Lisa’s bed-and-breakfast and saw another sign. This one is actually embroidered onto fabric and framed. It says, “Friendship isn’t a big thing. It’s a million little things.”

Both of those signs are so right. The one in the rosy bedroom reminds me of all the times I’ve called on a trusted friend when I needed some encouragement. Almost every time, my friend will share her faith in believing God can do anything. Then she’ll offer to pray for me, and finally she’ll start pointing out the reasons I can have hope.

Friendship is so much about everyday little things. Sure, big, traumatic events or circumstances do come along, and we need others to help us get through those times, but those smaller bumps in the road are where we need a good, consistent friend to keep us focused on God. When we learn to focus on him during the “smaller” things, it will be more natural for us to do the same thing when we face a “bigger” thing.

Girl Gab: Think about some of the little things that make your friendship as mother and daughter one that sticks closer than a brother (or sister). Thank each other for those little things.
