Bible Blast: Read Genesis 25:21-26
As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter. He was an outdoorsman, but Jacob had a quiet temperament, preferring to stay at home. Genesis 25:27
Are you a twin? Do you know twins? It always blows my mind when I meet twins. If they’re physically identical, I can’t believe my eyes. It’s amazing that two people could look so much alike. If they’re not identical twins, I’m stunned at how two people born at the same time could look so different from each other. Twins truly are incredible.
Being a twin can be so much fun, but it can also be really challenging. Twins are often dressed alike, have similar names, and share everything. So when they get older and want to express themselves as individuals, it can be difficult to figure out just what they really like or don’t like. They love having a twin, but they also want to be themselves.
Have you heard of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen? They took turns playing the character Michelle Tanner on the TV show Full House. For years they’ve been known as “The Olsen Twins,” but now that they’re adults, they don’t want to be called that. They have different interests and gifts and want to be known for who they are as individual women.
Jacob and Esau are the first twins mentioned in the Bible. I love that, before they were even born, God told Rebekah (their mom) that the two boys each had a special purpose in becoming two nations that wouldn’t get along. He didn’t say that together they would lead a nation and they would never be separated and they would do everything the exact same way at the same time for the rest of their same lives. No, in fact, if you read on to verse 27, it tells just how different those two boys were. “As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter. He was an outdoorsman, but Jacob had a quiet temperament, preferring to stay at home.”
Being a twin is wonderful. It’s something to be enjoyed, but it’s also important to know that just because you’re a twin, it doesn’t mean that you’re not a very special, totally unique person.
