Snow-woman

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 147:16-18

He sends the snow like white wool; he scatters frost upon the ground like ashes. Psalm 147:16

When I read today’s verse, I couldn’t help but try to picture God in heaven getting ready to send snow. Of course, my imagination isn’t the least bit scientific. I just think it’s fun to imagine God gathering up a bunch of white, fluffy snow in his great big arms. Then maybe he takes in a deep, God-sized breath and gently blows the snow so that it falls onto the earth.

God sends so much snow to the town of Bethel, Maine, that they decided to do something extraordinary with it. So in 2008 they built the world’s tallest snow-woman. She’s 122 feet tall! To give you an idea of how tall that is, the Statue of Liberty is 151 feet from the base to the torch.

This gigantic snow-woman’s name is Olympia. She was named after Maine’s United States Senator, Olympia Snowe. (That’s her real last name!) It took thirteen million pounds of snow to create Olympia. She had five-foot wreaths for eyes, and they used sixteen snow skis for eyelashes! Her scarf was 130 feet long, and instead of using sticks for arms, they used trees! To make sure the snow-lady had some bling, the people of Bethel gave Olympia a six-foot snowflake pendant to wear around her neck.

The sad thing about snowmen and snow-women is that since they’re made of snow, they do eventually melt. Olympia the Snow-woman melted completely by July of 2008. I wonder what happened when thirteen million pounds of snow melted. Was there a flood?

God loves giving us things to enjoy—like snow. Or if you don’t live in a place where you get snow, I bet you can think of things God has created around you that you enjoy like water, sand, trees, or flowers. Get out there and do something fun with it. Go swimming or fishing! Make sand angels! Build a tree fort! Pick a bouquet of flowers, or make a flower tiara for your hair!
