Bible Blast: Read Psalm 5:11-12

The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Psalm 27:1

When I was a kid we lived next to a dairy farm. The dairy farmers milked hundreds of cows every night, and all that activity produced a lot of strange noises. I remember this because those noises produced some scary nights for me. Have you ever heard a noise at night and gotten scared because your imagination ran wild?

I used to dream the same nightmare over and over while living next to that dairy farm. It still gives me a creepy feeling so I’m not even going to tell you what it was, but it made me afraid that something was going to happen to my family. My dad would come in and check on me, and I would crawl up onto his lap because I was so afraid.

I don’t have that nightmare anymore. In fact, I can honestly say that while I used to be afraid of the dark (even as an adult), I’m very confident and unafraid at night these days. How did I stop being afraid? I used Bible verses to remind me that God protects me.

The book of Psalms is full of verses proclaiming the truth that God is our protection, refuge, help, guard, and rescuer. He sees us and loves us, and he’s all-powerful. We need to believe the truth of God’s Word instead of believing that a strange noise or creepy feeling means danger is near.

I believe one way we can eliminate a lot of scary feelings and thoughts is by being really careful about what we watch and read. It may feel kind of thrilling and fun to watch a scary movie, but if it puts untrue, dark thoughts into your head, it’s not honoring God (or helping you sleep!). And if you’re into a great book, I know it’s hard to skip over pages if a creepy part comes up, but it will help keep your mind pure.

As God’s child, you have no reason to be afraid. It’s true that sometimes people experience bad things, but you can always know that God has a big plan for everything that happens.

Girl Gab: Write today’s focus verse big on a sheet of paper and hang it up by your bed where you can see it if you get afraid. When your mind starts wandering to creepy things, read this verse out loud and know that God is your Protector!
