Bible Blast: Read Galatians 4:7-9

Now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?

Galatians 4:9

Imagine with me: You have a really big test at school one day. Before school you pray, “Lord, please help me do well on this test!” On the way to school, you see a white horse running through a field. You get an A+ on your test that day. Now every time you see a white horse running, you know it means you’re going to do well on a test.

Right?

Big, fat wrong!

Do you know what that is? Superstition.

Superstition means you believe if a certain thing happens it has the power to make something else happen. Like, some people believe if you break a mirror you’ll have bad luck. That’s not godly. That’s called superstition.

Superstition shows up in many ways. Some people stay away from certain animals, numbers, dates of the year, or colors because they think something bad will happen. Sometimes people try to make their relationship with God into a superstition by saying, “God has really blessed our family these past several months. He must be preparing us for something bad around the corner.”

Superstition is sin because it acknowledges other things or situations as having more power over your life than the Lord. Living a superstitious life also brings a lot of fear. If people are constantly trying to avoid certain things because they don’t want to have something bad happen, it will make them very nervous to do anything out of fear that they might “get it wrong.”

Get into a habit of not even joking about superstitious things. Don’t have a “lucky number.” Pet a black cat. And most importantly, praise Jesus every time something good happens—and praise his name even when something bad happens. God is totally in control!
