No More Darkness

No More Darkness

Bible Blast: Read 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

2 Corinthians 6:15

Unless you haven’t gone anywhere for the past month, you’ve seen the same things I have all over the place. Witches, ghosts, goblins, mummies, spiders, monsters, and all sorts of spooky decorations fill the stores and people’s yards. Halloween is here. Whether you participate in trick-or-treating or not, those images can be really freaky.

I jump a little when I turn the corner in a store to find a cackling witch doll staring at me. I have to be careful not to get stuck watching one of the über-scary movies they’re playing on TV so I don’t have bad dreams. I make a choice not to take part in the scary stories on the news or in the paper. There’s a reason why all of that makes us feel uncomfortable. You weren’t created for that kind of darkness.

In today’s Bible Blast you read about how light can’t have anything to do with darkness. So who is “light”? You are. In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.” If you are light, then the things of darkness should make you uncomfortable. The Spirit inside of you can’t hang out with dark stuff.

Also, you represent life. In John 14:6, Jesus says that he is the way, the truth, and the life. He is life, and you are his follower. Tombstones and mummies have nothing to do with light and life. Halloween decor is all about darkness and death.

So what do you do when there are spooky things all over the place? The best thing you can do is pray. I always pray that God would protect my mind, because I don’t like to be scared. You can also pray that people in your neighborhood just wouldn’t put the scary decorations out this year. But most importantly, you can pray that Jesus’ light in you would shine more brightly than anything else so that your friends wouldn’t be attracted to darkness and death stuff. Instead, they would run toward the light and life they see in you.

Girl Gab: With your mom, pray for your neighbors and friends today. Ask that the light of Jesus would shine into their homes and give them hope. Talk to your mom about your family’s view of Halloween. Ask questions and decide together if anything should change in how you approach this day.
