It’s A Snake! No, It’s A Moth?

It’s a Snake! No, It’s a Moth?

Bible Blast: Read Acts 2:42-47

Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. John 13:35

Do you know how to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth? I used to think that butterflies were pretty and colorful and moths were ugly and plain, but that’s not necessarily true.

Butterflies rest with their wings held high, while the wings of a moth lie flat when the moth is sitting still. Moths have fatter bodies than butterflies, and moths’ antennae can be all sorts of different sizes and shapes. Since moths are mostly active at night, those feathery feelers help them find food and other moths to hang out with. Butterflies have antennae, too, but they’re simpler because, since they flutter around during the day, they can also use their eyesight to get around.

While it is a fact that moths are usually less exciting to look at than butterflies, that’s not always true. Take the Atlas moth, for example. It’s found in Southeast Asia and is known to be the world’s largest moth, with a wingspan of up to twelve inches! The Atlas moth got its name because the pattern on its wings resembles a map. This moth is also called the Snake’s Head moth since the tip of its wings looks a lot like the head of a snake, complete with an eye. The fake snake heads help scare off predators.

Christians have a “pattern” that helps people tell the difference between them and people who don’t follow Christ. That pattern is called love. Before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples that their love for each other would let others know they were his disciples. What do you think about that? That sounds as if Christians should be going nuts expressing their love for each other, don’t you think?

All through the Bible, you’ll find the command to love each other. When we love each other, we are loving God. In a world where people aren’t loving one other very well, others are going to notice when we love the way Jesus wants us to.

Do you have the mark of love on your wings?

Girl Gab: What would be another good pattern for a moth to have on its wings to get rid of predators? Ask God to give you his love for others as you go about your day.
