The Book With The Gold Letters

The Book with the Gold Letters

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 119:9-11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

Carla was excited on her tenth birthday

To open the gifts stacked beside the cake.

Mom handed her a gift, and Carla took the paper off.

It was a Book with gold letters and pages so soft.

“Tell me about it,” she said as she looked at her dad.

“This is one of the most precious things that we have.

In good times and bad times give it a look.

This Book will keep you from sin.

Sin will keep you from this Book.”

Carla put the Bible on the table beside her bed.

The next day before school she picked it up and read

That love is patient and kind no matter what.

She prayed and asked God to help her be like that.

In gym class when Anne wanted Carla to make fun

Of another girl who couldn’t really run

Carla said, “No, because that isn’t kind,”

And went to run with the girl who had fallen behind.

After school Carla’s brother was watching TV,

But Carla wanted her show, so she disagreed.

The argument turned into more and more

Til it ended when Carla shoved him onto the floor.

She sat in her room with a bad attitude.

“Should I read the Bible? Not in the mood.”

When her dad came home she looked in his eyes

And spoke her opinion, trying hard not to cry:

“Today that Book kept me from sin, like you said,

But sin also kept me from that Book,” and she hung her head.

Her dad hugged her and whispered, “I know how you feel.

I’ve had days like that, too, but here’s the sweet deal;

Keep reading this Book and you’ll know from the start

God’s truth will change your big ten-year-old heart.”

Girl Gab: Do you think my poetry is silly? Why don’t you try to write a short four-line poem about today’s focus verse, Psalm 119:11. Put it somewhere that you can see it every day.
