Language Lab: What Is “Evil”?

Bible Blast: Read Genesis 2:15-17

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Romans 12:21

Now before we even begin today’s Language Lab, I want you to pray: “God, be my teacher today. Show me that you have power over all evil. That makes me feel good because you live inside of me. Thank you for that! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.”

The reason we’re talking about evil today isn’t so that we can learn all the evil stuff we can and get creepy feelings. We’re learning what evil is so that we can learn more about who God is. Knowing about God and knowing God are the most important things!

Evil is the opposite of good. It’s bad stuff. It’s sin. God has nothing to do with evil.

Now the one who started the whole evil thing is the devil, or Satan. He’s the ultimate bad guy, and he totally hates God. Most people believe (based on Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28) that the devil was originally a worship-leading angel in heaven. Then he got too stuck on himself, so he tried to make himself more important than God, which, of course, doesn’t work! So God kicked the devil and a bunch of the angels who were with him out of heaven.

If the devil is able to love anything, he loves evil. He wants everyone to do bad things that don’t honor God, and he does his best to get people as far from God as he can. He’s kind of like the kid who didn’t get invited to a party, so he tries to get as many people as possible to not go to the party too.

Here’s the good news: “The Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). And that is exactly why we don’t have to get totally freaked out or afraid of the devil. Jesus has all the power to get rid of the devil’s plans to keep us far from God. All we have to do is ask!

Revelation 20 tells us about a day when God will get rid of the devil forever. So no matter what, the end result of that evil guy is extinction. Awesome!
