Do What You Can

Bible Blast: Read 2 Thessalonians 2:4-6, 13

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

The pastor of a church was encouraging the people in his congregation to get into the Word of God. One Sunday he stood in front of them and preached a message called, “Five Ways to Get the Most out of Your Bible.” Do you want to know what those five ways are? Here you go!

1. Get started right away. As the saying goes, “There’s no time like the present.” Start reading it today. Don’t wait until the full moon or until your sixteenth birthday.

2. Read every day. Even if it’s just one verse, it’s a great thing to make reading your Bible a number one priority for every day. It gets truth into your mind and heart, and that’s really going to help you live a godly, truthful life.

3. Begin with prayer. Before you sit down to read God’s Word, pray. Ask God to help you focus on what you’re reading and ask him directly to teach you something. I believe he will teach you every single time you ask him.

4. Have a plan. Instead of just flipping the Bible open, closing your eyes, and blindly pointing to a verse to read, start somewhere. Maybe you’ll want to read a verse from Proverbs every day. Or maybe you’ll want to read a little more so you’ll read a psalm. A lot of people like to read an action-packed Gospel, like Mark. Others like just to start in the beginning with Genesis 1:1. Having a plan will help you do it more regularly.

5. Ask yourself three questions:

1) What does this Scripture say? Like, what are the facts?

2) What does this Scripture mean?

3) What does this Scripture mean to me?

There really are no rules to reading the Bible, but these are definitely guidelines to help you fall in love with God’s Word.

Girl Gab: Look over these five ideas with your mom. Are there any that really stand out to you? If so, that may be God giving you a little nudge, saying, “Why don’t you give this a shot?” If you don’t already have some sort of Bible reading plan you’re following, come up with one with your mom’s help.
