Bible Blast: Read Genesis 11:1-9

That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world. Genesis 11:9

Did you read the first verse of today’s Bible Blast? It says, “At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words.”

That is so wild to think about, isn’t it? Everybody in the entire world spoke the same language. That definitely made things easier for them as they built the huge tower to make themselves famous. But since God doesn’t want people to focus on making themselves greater than everybody else, he intervened and made them speak different languages. This scattered those people all over the earth.

Languages are so interesting. Most people learn to speak the languages spoken by their parents and neighbors. Sometimes people make up language as they go along—like the cowboys did. Did you know they had different cowboy words for common everyday things? Here’s a little cowboy language quiz for you. Try to figure out what cowboys were saying when they said these words:

1. “hot rock”

2. “splatter dabs”

3. “dough-wrangler”

The answers are below, but here’s a hint for some of the words: Maybe for breakfast tomorrow morning you can ask the dough-wrangler to fix up some splatter dabs and hot rocks!

If you meet someone who speaks a different language or has trouble speaking your first language, don’t just ignore her or make fun of her. Put yourself in her shoes. (That means, try to think about how it would feel to be that person.)

It does take a little more work to be friends with someone who speaks a different language, but reach out to and love that stranger, just like Jesus would.
