Girl Power or God Power?

There are a lot of programs and things going on to get girls your age to have a good self-esteem. Today I want to show you what “self-esteem” means. When you “esteem” something, you’re saying it’s good and has value. So when you hear that someone has a low self-esteem, it means she doesn’t think she has much good or value to offer.

It breaks my heart when I see a young girl crying because she doesn’t feel special. I can remember a time in my life when I felt that way too. What if I told that girl who has “low self-esteem” she just needs to think about positive things and believe she can do anything because she’s a girl? And what if I put a T-shirt on her that says in bold, pink puffy letters, “GIRL POWER!”? And what if I covered her in buttons and pins that say, “GIRLS RULE” and “SUPER GIRL” and all sorts of other wonderful things about girls? Will that solve her low self-esteem problem? Uh . . . I doubt it.

In today’s Bible Blast, Paul gives the real medicine for a low self-esteem sickness. You see, when Paul says he was the worst of all sinners, he really meant that. His job before he gave his life to Jesus was to hurt Christians and sometimes even have them killed! He absolutely hated people who loved Jesus. Yet God used Paul’s life to bring millions of people to Christ.

Paul knew that anything good that came out of his life was because of God. In verse 12 he thanks Jesus for giving him strength to do what he did. Paul didn’t have any faith in himself, but he had all kinds of faith in God. He had a serious case of a healthy God-esteem.

It really is fun and special to be a girl, but that’s not going to keep you encouraged when you’re not feeling good about yourself. Knowing that you can do all things through Christ is where real value comes from (see Philippians 4:13). The answer to self-esteem problems doesn’t come from believing in yourself. It comes from believing in God through you.
