He Holds the Keys

Bible Blast: Read Revelation 1:17-19

This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open. Revelation 3:7

I bet I can guess something that’s true about you. I bet that you and your mom have missed some devos this year. It’s easy to do. I miss devos myself, but something I never miss is praying first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I might only say, “Good morning, Jesus” or “Good night, Lord,” but I always start and end my day with prayer.

There was a well-known writer from England named Thomas Fuller. One of the things he’s kind of famous for saying about prayer is this: “Prayer: the key of the day and the lock of the night.” Even though that’s not a Bible verse, it’s so true. Let’s look at how prayer is a key for the day and a lock for the night.

Prayer is the “Key of the Day”: Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” If it’s true that God made each day, then doesn’t it make sense to go to him to find out why? He doesn’t waste time, and he doesn’t do things “just because” or for no reason at all. So it must be that each and every day has something for us. I don’t believe the day can be fully opened up until we’ve spent time in prayer.

Prayer is the “Lock of the Night”: At the end of every day, the sun goes down, the moon comes up, and eventually our heads hit our pillows. What a great time to think about the day and talk to God about what happened. It’s good to remember the day’s events with the Lord and to ask him questions. Another good thing about locking up the night with prayer is knowing that he keeps you safe while you sleep. Check out Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.” Tell God that you know he takes care of you and that you have no reason to be afraid.

It really is like you have two prayer keys in your hand—one for opening your day and one for sealing it up at night. Of course, you can pray to God all the time, but don’t forget that each day he gives you is a personal gift.

Girl Gab: Ask your mom for an old key she doesn’t need or use anymore. Take a tiny piece of paper and write “PRAYER” on it. Tape or glue that word to the key. Keep the key in your wallet or change purse. Let it remind you of today’s teaching.
