Everything We Have Is His

Bible Blast: Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-20

Who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us! 1 Chronicles 29:14

King David was close to the end of his life. He had reigned as king of Israel for about forty years and was making preparations for his son Solomon to be the next king. God had told David that he would not be the one to build the Temple, but that his son would build it. Once David heard this, he began gathering all the materials and people needed for Solomon to erect this amazing Temple. Among the resources King David gathered from his own riches and from the leaders of Israel were 10,000 gold coins, 300 tons of gold, 637 tons of silver, 675 tons of bronze, and 3,750 tons of iron! (To give you an idea of how much that is, an average car weighs about 1.5 tons. So this stuff weighed about as much as 7,000 cars!)

In 1 Chronicles, it says that “the people rejoiced over the offerings, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD, and King David was filled with joy” (29:9). So these people had given literally tons of their riches for the building of God’s Temple, and they were totally pumped about it!

The focus verse today includes King David’s personal words of praise to the Lord after he and his workers had everything collected and ready for Solomon to build the Temple. He didn’t say, “God, look at all the stuff we have given for your Temple! We’ve sacrificed so much! Just look at all this gold!” He was very aware that anything the people had came from the Lord to begin with.

When we realize that all the blessings we have are from the Lord, it’s much easier to give them away for his work or his people. It’s because of God’s provision that we have jobs, money, talents, food, health, freedom, or even an earth to live on. Once you really have it in your head that it’s all God’s stuff, you’ll find it’s much easier to give it away.
