Swearing

Swearing

Why is it so bad to swear? Everyone does it.

God’s Response

You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. Exodus 20:7

Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death. Exodus 21:17

Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. Ephesians 5:4

To profane something, whether the flag of your nation or the name of God, is to make common what ought to be respected or holy. It means to pollute that which is pure. When you use the names God or Jesus Christ as swear words, you profane their holy names by making them common or being derogatory. When you lace your speech with coarse, vulgar language, you profane God and yourself. As a new creature in Christ, you are to be clean on the inside. Jesus taught that it’s not what goes into your mouth that is sinful, but what comes out. You must be careful that your speech is pure and above reproach.

This Is Promising

Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Psalm 34:12-13
