Just Do It

Why does God demand that I obey him? Isn’t that a bit authoritarian?

God’s Response

Do what is right and good in the LORD’s sight, so all will go well with you. Then you will enter and occupy the good land that the LORD swore to give your ancestors. Deuteronomy 6:18

The anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Ephesians 5:6

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. . . . humbled himself in obedience to God. Philippians 2:6, 8

God’s demand for your obedience is based on his commitment to your well-being. Sometimes people have the illusion that freedom is doing anything they want. God says that true freedom comes from obedience and from knowing what not to do. The restrictions are for your good; they help you avoid sin and misery in life and free you to enjoy life to its fullest. Just as a loving parent puts restrictions on a little child to protect him (such as not touching a hot stove or playing in a busy street), God puts boundaries around his children to keep them safe. Disobedience will result in a life full of pain and trouble, and an eternity of misery in hell.
