In Control
Can I develop better self-control?
God’s Response
Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness. 2 Peter 1:5-6
All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 1 Corinthians 9:25
Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8
Self-control is one of the hardest character traits to achieve because it means denying what comes naturally to your sinful nature. Some of the hardest things to control are your thoughts, words, and physical appetites. Self-control requires God’s work within you as well as your own effort. Take control of your life by honestly assessing your areas of weakness and determining that they will no longer rule you. Stay away from situations in which you lose control, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you overcome those temptations. And don’t forget to thank God for his help.
This Is Promising
Better to have self-control than to conquer a city. Proverbs 16:32
