Why does the Bible tell me to guard my heart? How do I do that?

God’s Response

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. 1 John 5:21

My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course. Proverbs 23:19

The purpose of a guardrail on a dangerous curve is not to inhibit your freedom to drive, but to save your life! That guardrail is a sign of security and safety, not an obstacle to flying. In the same way, you need a guardrail as you travel through life—not to inhibit your freedom, but to keep your life from going out of control. Your heart determines where you go because it most affects your passions. If you don’t guard your heart with God’s Word and stay focused on the road God has put you on, you may have a terrible accident when temptation distracts you.

This Is Promising

These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the LORD, with faithfulness and an undivided heart.” 2 Chronicles 19:9
