Stretch A Little

They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Jeremiah 17:8

Besides the one in your hand, have you read any good books lately? What’s the last good movie you saw? How long has it been since you had a nonbusiness lunch with a friend or had people over for a casual dinner at home?

There really is life outside work. It’s the extra things we do—the nonwork stuff—that gives us roots and builds our foundations.

While building his case against Israel, God described a handful of people whose lives pleased him. “Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit” (Jeremiah 17:8).

God cares deeply about your profession.

He gifted you with unique skills and gave you a job because he knows how happy you are when you’re productive.

However, obsessive attention to one thing—a job, school, church, or even a spouse—can produce very shallow roots that yield far less than the abundant life God wants for you.

Strike out. Try something new. Stretch your roots. Have fun.
