Maintain Your Focus

Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard. They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, “We knew that all the time!” Isaiah 48:6-7

I describe people as being “heavily invested in the past” when they do everything they can to maintain the status quo—even if it means being uncomfortable.

Look out for these people when you present new ideas or investigate a problem.

• “We knew that. Are you going to tell us anything new?”
• “If you’re aware of this, why haven’t you corrected it?”
• “We don’t think it’s a big problem.”

God defines these folks as iron-necked, stubborn, and obstinate.

• Bad news—they will always be around.
• Good news—they are powerless against the inevitable. The future is going to happen despite them. They will eventually change or die trying not to.

Your job as a leader is to maintain your focus on the future so that when it does arrive, you are ready to step in and lead those who are willing to follow.
