Slow Down Before Deciding

Sarai said to Abram, “The LORD has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” Genesis 16:2

When my daughter and I watch Wheel of Fortune, we holler at the TV when a contestant blurts out a letter that has already been picked. I’m tempted to do the same with this story.

Abram, wait! Think about this. Yahweh himself has promised you a child through Sarai. Oh man, this is going to be trouble.

I have no empirical evidence for this, but I think the quality of a decision is directly related to the amount of long-range perspective you apply to the process.

Abram and Sarai were just looking at the immediate situation. They didn’t understand that the effects of their choices that day would last for a long, long time.

Are you a problem solver? Are you always ready to jump in with a solution? The value of your contribution will be judged by the quality of the results, not the speed of your decision.
