Show Respect, Regardless

Show Respect, Regardless

The LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9

In the dialog that followed Adam’s first sin, God demonstrated a leadership attribute that is very difficult for us to imitate.

Obviously, God knew the answers to his own questions, but rather than directly accuse Adam, he asked questions and followed Adam’s lead in the conversation.

Despite the dire consequence of Adam’s actions, God honored him by allowing him his day in court. God would have been justified in sweeping his hand over Eden and wiping Adam off the face of the earth, but he gave Adam a chance to explain himself.

Let’s be crystal clear—his first sin was a monumental mistake on Adam’s part. His actions forever changed the relationship between God and his Creation. Even so, God showed an incredible level of respect for Adam in his approach.

As leaders, we sometimes put the agenda ahead of the people we’ve been given to lead. No matter what they do, and despite the seriousness of their actions, we should show them the same respect that God granted Adam in the Garden.
