Resist Shortsighted “solutions”

For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Mark 4:22

How many corporate scandals would be avoided if leaders paid attention to this simple fact? How many marriages would be saved? How much embarrassment avoided?

The temptation to lie, cheat, or steal is driven by the rush of gratification such actions purport to provide.

Breaking the rules opens the door to a quick reward, but there is always a price to be paid.

Jesus couldn’t have put it any clearer—your actions, motives, and decisions will be revealed. Someone will pay the price, sometime, somewhere.

Perhaps you’re tempted to take a shortcut. Here’s a suggestion: Take a moment to imagine the headlines that will be written when your actions come to light. While you’re thinking about the immediate pleasure you’ll receive, think also about the pain you’ll feel when everything is brought into the open.

The power of pleasure is very strong. Is the short-term gain worth the long-term pain?
