Reflect On Your Own Actions

Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others. Luke 6:37

Howard is a friend and mentor who occasionally offers me a dose of painful but necessary advice.

We met when he was brought in to consult my department. I wanted to put my best foot forward, so I spent most of our first session telling him all the things I was not:

“I’m not like so-and-so who doesn’t care about people’s feelings.”

“Or like so-and-so who makes rash decisions based on personal preference.”

“And certainly not like so-and-so who overspends her budget.”

Finally, Howard stopped me and said, “You’ve told me all the things you’re not. Now, tell me something you are. Don’t tell me what you don’t do; tell me what you do.”

Jesus would prefer that we deal with our own issues. He knows how easily we point a finger at others without seeing similar faults of our own, so he tells us not to judge others.
