Don’t Cheat Your Employees

I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages. Malachi 3:5

In one breath, God voices his displeasure with people who practice witchcraft, break their marriage vows, tell lies, and cheat employees.

What constitutes cheating a worker out of his or her wages?

Are workers being cheated when

• executives receive comfortable bonus checks the same week layoff notices go out to rank-and-file wage earners?
• you delay a deserved salary increase until they ask for it?
• top managers are paid hundreds of times more than the average workers’ hourly rate?
• married men are paid more than single women for the same job because the guy has a family to support?

Cheating can be defined as taking unfair advantage of someone. God says he will witness against those who do so.

Examine your own employee-wage practices. How do they stand up under the scrutiny of God’s judgment?
