Maximize Your Opportunities
Maximize Your Opportunities
Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5
The British essayist Adrian Plass suggests in Jesus: Safe, Tender, Extreme that Christianity can, at times, be described as a fortress. He writes that Christians sometimes “act in an aggressively defensive manner when we are confronted by ways of thinking that are different from our own.”a
Maybe that explains the tacit pressure we place on our young people to pursue careers in Christian companies—as if organizations could actually be saved.
Paul suggests a different perspective.
Paul doesn’t say, “If you must work in a secular field. . . .” He simply accepts the reality that we live among people who don’t share our beliefs, and he encourages us to live wisely.
Do you work outside the walls of the fort? Are you trying to choose between a Christian company or a secular one?
Take heart. If you ask God for wisdom, he will help you make the most of every opportunity.
