Ask For Confirmation

Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way.” Judges 6:36-37

Gideon’s famous request that God make the fleece wet and the ground dry was not motivated by defiance or disbelief. Gideon was eager to do God’s will, and he wanted to make sure he was hearing God correctly.

Taking the time to ask a few questions gave Gideon the confidence he needed to move ahead.

I’m convinced that God included this story in his book to help us see the need to examine our own motives before moving ahead with controversial decisions:

• What is the business (or ministry) reason for doing this?
• If we don’t do this, what happens?
• Are there other possible solutions?

Gideon wasn’t looking for a way out. He wanted reassurance that he was making the right choice.

Look for evidence that your idea is a good one.
