Security
The children of your people will live in security. Their children’s children will thrive in your presence.
Psalm 102:28
Security [n]: Protection, care, refuge
One of our church’s pastors, Todd Augustine, recently returned from a short missions trip to Japan. During the two weeks that Todd was away, his wife, Cindy, and their two young daughters went to visit Cindy’s mom in Georgia.
Driving down a rural Georgia road, Cindy, her mom, Eleah (six), and Katie (four) heard a huge crash on the top of their van. They were passing through a wooded, mountainous area, and apparently a tree up on the hillside had rotted and fallen—on them. A split second earlier and the large trunk would likely have gone through their windshield. God protects.
After Cindy brought the van to a stop and checked on her mom and daughters, she was thankful that there had been no serious injuries—only minor scrapes and cuts from broken glass. It could have been so much worse.
The first woman to stop and help them was especially warm and friendly, and Eleah looked up at the woman and said, “Do you know Jesus?” “I sure do, honey,” the woman replied, “and I’m praying for you right now!” God cares.
Seven thousand miles away, Todd woke up at 4 a.m. with the strong sense that he should call home. When he called, Eleah answered and relayed the whole story. Todd said, “In my utter helplessness over not being there to comfort my wife and daughters, I felt totally dependent on God’s care for the lives of those dearest to me.” God is our refuge.
How comforting to know that whether we are in the same room with our family or seven thousand miles away, we can always find our security in God.
Father,
Thank you that there is great security in being your child. Thanks for the protection, care, and refuge you bring to our lives—especially the many times when we’re not even aware of it. In the name of Jesus, amen.
