Security

For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

Just about every year my parents invite all four of their children and each of our families to spend a few days together at a local hotel right after Christmas. Each family unit stays in their own suite, and my parents stay in a conference room suite, which ends up being like Grand Central Station with lots of food and games. The adults have time to sit around and talk while the kids play games, explore the hotel, and swim in the pool. What a feeling of security and warmth for all of us! The older I get, the more I appreciate my parents’ generosity in providing the time for us all to be together as a family.

At church this morning, I also experienced great security and warmth as I shared in the Lord’s Supper. Along with the rest of the believers in my church family—one little part of the body of Christ—I partook of the bread and wine (grape juice) with the purpose of remembering Christ, receiving strength from him, and rededicating myself to his purposes.

The Greek word for Communion means fellowship, participating, and sharing. What security there is in remembering together that we have been delivered from sin because of Christ’s death and in being reminded again of his presence and power to help us. What anticipation we feel for a day yet to come when we will experience the ultimate in security—sharing Communion together with Christ in heaven!

Father,

Thank you for the security of being a part of your family and sharing Communion with other believers, our brothers and sisters in Christ. May we never take it lightly but always be reminded of your great love for us and your great power to help us. Amen.
