Security
Security
Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.
Psalm 27:10
If you were asked to illustrate the word security as it relates to a child, what would you describe? I might describe a little boy jumping into his father’s arms, knowing that his dad would catch him. Or I might envision a mother holding her sleeping baby snugly against her chest. Security is freedom from risk, danger, anxiety, or fear, and we mothers work at providing it for our children.
Sadly, we sometimes hear of parents who do the opposite. I recently heard a news report of a young couple who, after a dispute in their car, left their ten-month-old baby alongside a busy Chicago expressway. Thankfully, a doctor on his way to work saw the baby and took her to the hospital, where she was found to be in good physical condition. At the time of the news report, the state was seeking foster parents for the child.
What’s your mental picture of security? I’ve lived long enough to know that my picture isn’t money, a house, a job, a spouse, or health. My picture has me running into God’s arms, knowing that he cares for me even though he also is available for everyone else in the world who wants to spend time with him. No matter what kind of disappointment or rejection any of us has experienced, we know that if we come to God, he will never forsake us. That’s the ultimate in security.
Lord,
Thank you for always being ready to receive us. Thank you that we can run to you at any time about anything, because you are our Creator, and you know us inside out. Thank you that you never forsake us. Amen.
