The Simple Truth - The One Year Devotions for Men on the Go

The Simple Truth

Read 2 Corinthians 13:1-13

Our responsibility is never to oppose the truth, but to stand for the truth at all times. 2 Corinthians 13:8

Jesus says “I tell you the truth” about eighty times in the gospels. Over and over again he says it. Why? Because telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth builds trust.

The leaders of Jesus’ day had overworked their knowledge and come up with a system that was so complicated, people got lost in it. In contrast, Jesus made it simple. He challenges us to do the same. The truth tends to be simple, straightforward, and action-oriented. When you know the truth, you know what to do. One of the comical aspects of human nature is our tendency to overwork the analytical process and miss the simple truth. Consider the following scenario:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were on a camping and hiking trip. They had gone to bed and were lying there looking up at the sky.

Holmes said, “Watson, look up. What do you see?”

“I see thousands of stars,” Watson replied.

“And what does that mean to you?”

“Well, I guess it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?”

Holmes replied, “To me, it means someone has stolen our tent.”

What simple truth do you need today? Ask Jesus for insight that will lead you to the simple, practical conclusions you need. When you find yourself overthinking and overanalyzing, stop and ask God to show you the truth.

Lord, rescue me from speculation when the truth is evident.
