Moving Out Of A Cycle - The One Year Devotions for Men on the Go
Moving out of a Cycle
Read 2 Peter 2:17-20
They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves to sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. 2 Peter 2:19
In the movie Groundhog Day TV weatherman Bill Connors, the character played by Bill Murray, finds himself living the same day over and over again. At first he thinks he is going crazy. But when he figures out what is going on, he realizes he can use it to his advantage. The first thing he does is venture into self-destructive, cynical behavior. He overeats, mistreats people, and manipulates his environment for selfish gain.
Bill Connors thinks he is free, but the power quickly gets boring. He longs for real relationships and meaningful endeavors, so he decides to work on improving himself and helping others. As others benefit from his power, he finds himself much more satisfied. Only then can he move on to the next day.
Does your life feel like a series of endless cycles? Has your career reached a plateau? Are your relationships not working as well as you’d like? Are you repeatedly making spiritual and moral errors that keep tripping you up?
If you want to move on from this place in your life, start by making a simple change. Once you accept Christ, you are redeemed, but you are still a work in progress. In Christ you have more potential than you know. God wants to fill your life with satisfying relationships and meaningful pursuits. Once you take that first step, then you can move on to a new life with him.
Abraham Lincoln was fond of saying, “I will prepare myself and prepare myself and then my opportunity will come.”
When God comes in and changes you, he will give you opportunities to do great things for him. It’s just a matter of taking that first step.
Jesus, thank you for redeeming me and preparing me for the new life you have for me.
