Remember Who You Work For

Read Proverbs 22:16-29

Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than ordinary people. Proverbs 22:29

As an employer and leader, I keep my eye open for people with both talent and a strong work ethic. I also watch for people to whom I can delegate an assignment and walk away knowing the task will be done. When people earn my trust and do well the jobs I assign them, I invest in and encourage that person so that he or she rises up the ladder.

Nothing, however, frustrates a leader or employer more than finding out that he or she has been paying for work that isn’t being done well or done on time. And nothing causes more stress for a leader than finding out at the last minute that someone has dropped the ball.

Each of us, no matter what kind of work we do or for whom we do it, should strive to be the kind of worker a boss can trust, the kind of worker a boss wants to move up in his or her organization, the kind of worker who works hard at our assigned tasks.

But just how hard are we to work? Colossians 3:22 addresses slaves—those who were indentured to serve—at the time of the early church, but it contains good advice for workers in all callings and professions today: “You slaves must obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Obey them willingly because of your reverent fear of the Lord.”

Let pleasing Jesus be the standard in everything you do. Your boss may not be your best friend, but Jesus is, and you should work to please him. Your boss may not be good and godly, but when you work to please Jesus, you will please your boss in the process. Your boss may not even be reasonable, but if you work to please Jesus, your conscience will be clean.

Jesus, I work for you. Please guard my steps.
