Read Proverbs 28

Greed causes fighting; trusting the LORD leads to prosperity.

Proverbs 28:25

The contrasts included in many proverbs offer startling insights about life. They are not mathematical equations about life, but truthful observations that guide life. More often than not, these proverbs help us look at practical issues from God’s perspective.

Greed might be defined as the human tendency to create a god out of our desires. Untamed greed is an idol that must be served and satisfied. Greed abhors humility, generosity, and compassion. Greed tends to attack anything or anyone that dares to come between it and possible satisfaction. Greed leads to fighting. And it is never satisfied.

Trusting God turns greed on its head, however. It replaces our desires with God’s desires. We are trusting God when we say, “I desire to see your will done, Lord, more than my will.” Trusting God does lead to prosperity. It leads to confident living. It results in a full life, measured not against what everyone else has, but by the contentment that God has supplied what we need and will continue to do so. Eventually, trusting God leads to the ultimate prosperity—eternal life.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Trusting God destroys greed.

Lord, allow me at least one very clear opportunity to practice trusting you as I go about my routine today.
