Praise Gauntlet

Read Proverbs 27

Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised.

Proverbs 27:21

How do we respond to praise? Do we say, “It was really nothing,” or, “Anyone could have done that”? What if we feel like saying, “You know? You’re right. I am the best!” Praise does turn out to be a significant test.

God designed us to respond positively to praise. We enjoy being encouraged. We relish affirmation. In fact, a central motivation for Christians is the hope that we will one day hear God say to us, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

This proverb offers a hint on how to respond to praise. Like fire, praise melts and purifies what is valuable while burning up what is impure. It can bring to the surface things that aren’t good. For example, “Great job with that presentation! It made me rethink some assumptions I was making. But one illustration you used distracted me from your main point. Why not come up with a different one that drives home your helpful idea?” Wise praise includes a little heat.

Those receiving it shouldn’t take superficial praise or flattery too seriously. It’s a fire that hasn’t gotten hot enough to purify.
