Read Proverbs 29

Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice comes from the LORD.

Proverbs 29:26

The system of justice in our fallen world often operates on the principle of the highest clout. To paraphrase this proverb, “If you have the king’s favor, you’ve got nothing to worry about.” In a sense, people understand an underlying principle in the universe: There is someone at the top. There is someone beyond whom there is no further appeal. The problem isn’t so much that people want to appeal to a higher power to settle the issues of life. The problem is that people don’t go high enough!

This proverb does not say that lower forms of authority and justice never operate. Nor does this proverb attempt to dissuade people from seeking the king’s favor. It does, however, remind us that even the ruler receives his authority from God. This truth reminds us that depending on anyone other than God for ultimate justice is a hopeless effort. Eventually, we must trust that an all-wise, all-knowing, and absolutely just and holy God will settle the loose ends that keep tripping us up in life.
