Solid Savings

Read Proverbs 5

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Matthew 16:25

At times life seems like a mystery: We park in the driveway and drive on the parkway. We say feet “smell,” and our noses “run.” Likewise, Jesus’ method for finding true life may sound like a riddle. Yet, it is no mystery because his truth has been tried and proven. A significant few have discovered that the secrets to a life of happiness go something like this: “Go last to be first.” “Lose to win.” “Die to live.” Jesus’ words are an ill fit with our natural instincts, yet they are a salve to our spiritual nature. Surrendering selfish pursuits allows us to experience the joy of fulfilling others’ needs. Giving up personal gain is the gateway to outrageous satisfaction from God’s hand.

We must, however, understand that it is impossible to grasp Jesus’ intent unless we take him at his word. Experience is the best way to unravel the riddle.

A WORD FOR TODAY

“Lose to win; die to live”—Jesus’ words.

Today, Lord, I will give up finding my own route to satisfaction so I can find favor with you instead.
